Yet another South Carolina child has been killed in an ATV collision. This time the victim was a 6-year-old girl who died Sunday in Lancaster.

It may be hyperbole to say her blood is on the hands of the Governor who recently vetoed a bill requiring young children to take a safety course before operating an ATV, or on the hands of the Legislature lacking the courage to override his veto. Nevertheless, it would be appropriate for all of them to hang their heads in shame.

The Governor justified his veto, saying it “would impinge on private property rights.” As her parents and others grieve the untimely death of this beautiful child, they are unlikely to find comfort in the knowledge
that their “private property rights” have been protected.
